Since one of my main hobbies lately is learning about cooking and baking, it usually comes up in casual conversation that way — like in the form of “what’ve you been up to lately?” “Oh, I’ve been trying out a lot of new recipes at home!” “What kind of recipes have you been trying?” “Something I tried recently was making a vegan version of French toast with chia seeds, which worked out pretty well!”. Sometimes it’ll also be something like me telling a story about my failed attempt to make Alfredo sauce with cashews while swapping kitchen nightmare stories with somebody, stuff like that. It also comes up when talking about local takeout recommendations (“I just moved to the area! What are your favorite places to order food from around here?” “I really like _!” “What do you get there?” “I love their vegan pepperoni pizza!”). Food comes up in casual conversation really frequently for me, and I don’t usually mention being vegan — because it’s not important most of the time when it comes to, say, baking bread or which spices to use when, or even someone’s favorite chicken noodle soup recipe— but if it’s naturally relevant to the topic I won’t actively avoid it.
